Weave Along Weaving Techniques

Weave Along || Part 2: Spanish Lace Weave

New to the Weave Along?  This is a set of posts that help you learn to weave step-by-step! Find all the Weave Along Steps here.

Weave Along || Part 2: Spanish Lace WeaveIf you missed the first post, find all the Weave Along Steps here. This week we’re going to add two rows of the Spanish Lace Weave. This weave makes a really delicate design with a lot of negative space.  I couldn’t resist adding a fancy font to the title picture because I felt like this weave was getting pretty fancy, haha (pinkies up).

I started this weave along last week as a fun way that we can weave together, maybe learn some new stuff. I’m still planning on putting together a very detailed step-by-step at the end of this weave along, for those who want more detail on the steps.

Weave Along || Part 2: Spanish Lace Weavestep 1|| in the first part of the weave along, we ended our row with the weft thread over the end warp thread. So to start our Spanish Lace we’re going to bring the thread under the same warp thread. Weave the plain weave (under, over, under, etc) for 8 warp threads.

Tip: Make sure to start weaving this row well below the previous. Our Spanish Lace pattern will start low and then we’ll weave two more rows above it to fill in the “oval” we create with our thread.

step 2|| for the next row, follow the opposite plain weave pattern (under, over, under, etc) for 8 warp threads, but weave these rows above the previous row from step 1.

step 3|| to complete the Spanish Lace, weave a 3rd row above the 2nd row in step 2. Again, weaving in the plain weave pattern (under, over, under, etc.) across the 8 warp threads. You’ve woven a some-what circular shape, or what looks like a backwards ‘s’.

Weave Along || Part 2: Spanish Lace Weavestep 4|| now that one Spanish Lace shape is complete, start the next one by weaving across the next 8 warp threads. Start this row again at a downward angle, so that you leave space to weave two more rows above it to create the backwards ‘s’.

step 5|| continue in the same way across all your warp threads until you reach the end.

With the first “row” of Spanish Lace complete, we’re going to make a second row in a mirrored pattern to the first “row”.

Weave Along || Part 2: Spanish Lace Weavestep 6|| the weft thread ended over the last warp thread, so for this next row start with the weft thread under the same warp and weave the plain weave pattern across the 8 warp threads. Again leaving room so that you can create the ‘s’ shape with two more rows above this one.

step 7|| for the next row, follow the opposite plain weave pattern (under, over, under, etc) for 8 warp threads, but weave these rows above the previous row from step 6.

step 8|| to complete the Spanish Lace, weave a 3rd row above the 2nd row in step 7. Again, weaving in the plain weave pattern (under, over, under, etc.) across the 8 warp threads. Your ‘s’ shape should be complete.

Weave Along || Part 2: Spanish Lace Weavestep 9|| start the next lace shape by weaving across the next 8 warp threads. Start this row again at a downward angle, so that you leave space to weave two more rows above it to create the ‘s’ shape.

step 10|| continue weaving the lace all the way across the warp threads, so that you have two “rows” of Spanish Lace that mirror each other.

This Spanish Lace Weave is really different from ways I’ve woven before, especially the weaving upwards after you make a row well below the other one. It’s really neat to weave over just a few warps at a time and make a shape. What do you think of this weave? I’m really excited to see what others have made once we get to the end of this weave along. Find all the Weave Along Steps here.

Happy Weaving!

I luv your funny comments & the designs you come up with. Do you ever weave on a rigid heddle loom? I have soooo much trouble warping mine.

You just made my day! I don’t have a rigid heddle, but I really want to get one some day. They look so fun! I just need to start saving my pennies 🙂

I’m rather new to weaving but would like to do the Weave Along. Do you have a picture of the finished weave, so I can determine if it’s beyond my skills?

I actually am just making this as I go, so I don’t have a finished weave picture. I like to think that this is ok for beginners but if you’re not sure, I also have a free pattern for beginner’s that I send to people who sign up for my email list https://www.theweavingloom.com/free-beginners-weaving-pattern/

Not sure how much yarn to measure out. Would you suggest 4-5 X width of wArp for Spanish lace? I ran out halfway through second row

hmm, good question. I usually just measure my thread 4 times from my wrist to my elbow. That length seems to work well for me, I think 4 – 5 x the width of the warp might work. It stinks to run out in the middle of the row, hopefully this measurement will work for you.

I’m a bit new to weaving. Do you have a picture of the finished Weave Along, so I can see if it is something doable for me?
