Weave Along Weaving Techniques

Weave Along || Part 5: Switching Between Colors

Weave Along || Part 5: Weaving Two ColorsThis week in our weave along, I wanted to add some solid lines to give the weave a little more weight. (Find all Weave Along Posts here). The key lesson in this post is how to weave multiple rows with two different colored weft threads. We’ll weave some rows with our white thread and then weaving in some rows with a peach thread (or whatever your second color is) and then weave that white thread back in. So you’ll be able to see how we can switch between different warp threads and keep it continuous without having to cut and tuck the ends in later.

I’m also going to be weaving a small pattern with my peach thread, which adds a really subtle detail. I like subtle details because they are usually not noticed at first and are almost like a surprise to someone looking at the weave for the first time, which adds a nice layer of interest to the weave. Like the longer someone looks at it, the more they find.

Alright, so on to the weaving:

step 1: start with weaving 3 rows of the plain weave, pushing your rows up under the twinning triangles that we made last time.

Weave Along || Part 5: Weaving Two Colorsstep 2: now we’ll start our subtle pattern.

  • White thread – taking the same white thread that you wove the plain weave rows, return weave under 1 warp thread, over 1 warp thread, under 3 warps, over 1 warp, repeating the under 3 over 1 pattern until you reach the end of your weave. Then let the white weft thread lay off to the side of the loom.
  • Peach thread – I’m using some of my warp thread to weave this second weft color. Taking your second colored thread weave under 3, over 1, repeating this pattern of under 3, over 1 until you reach the end of your weave. Pack both white and peach threads together against the other rows you have woven.

Weave Along || Part 5: Weaving Two Colorsstep 3: we will only weave with our peach thread in this step, still leaving the white thread laying off to the side. With the peach thread weave under 1, over 1, repeating this pattern until you reach the end of your weave. Pack the peach thread against the other rows you have woven.

step 4: back to weaving two colored threads.Weave Along || Part 5: Weaving Two Colors

  • Peach thread – Since I left off with my peach thread over 1, I want to start by weaving under that same warp thread. Then follow the pattern of over 1 warp thread, under 3, over 1, under 3, repeating the over 1, under 3 until you reach the end of your warp threads.Weave Along || Part 5: Weaving Two Colors
  • White thread – My white thread ended under the warp, so now I’m going to take that string and bring it down under the peach rows and start with it over 1 on the end warp thread. When you do this your white thread will be hidden behind your weave and you can continue weaving. After you pass the white thread over the end warp, then weave it under 3, over 1, under 3, repeating the over 1, under 3. Pack the white & peach threads against the other rows you have woven.

step 5: finish this part of the pattern by weaving 3 plain rows of the white thread.

So there it is. We just wove a slight triangular zig-zag with our peach thread along with adding some solid rows of our white thread. This tutorial showed how you can weave two different colored threads to create a pattern.

I hope you’re enjoying the weave along as much as I am. Click here to see all the weave along posts.

Happy Weaving!

Thanks so much for starting the weave along, Kate. I just started the other day because I had something on the loom that needed finishing off. I have a C Cactus loom designed more for Navajo style weaving which means I am doing mine bottom up rather than top down. I chose a deep purple warp and a coral weft. It is really looking pretty. I don’t know if I have ever seen a weave along before, classes online, but not a weave along. Kudos to you and thank you for the great pictures and directions.

That sounds so fun. Maybe we can share pictures of everyone’s weaves, I’ll try to think about how we can do that. I’m excited to see what everyone has made!
